For making our drums we use the skins of animals (roe, fallow, and red deer) who have lived freely here in Mecklenburg (NE Germany). We clean the skins, and remove the hair by hand. Then we put them up to dry.
For the drum frames we use spruce wood, which makes them light and sturdy.
Finally we chose a hide and a frame that go well together. We cut the skin to size, soak it, stretch it over the frame, and let it dry. We use dacron line for stretching, and soft cotton thread for the handlecross.
